i think human rights should not be thought of as a focus on the individual. Nor is it a "natural" way things "should be". i think it is an assertion that all humans are members of a larger, consciously crafted human society that has time and again defied the boundaries of how animals in nature live and die. Human rights, as are most ideologues, unnatural. it is the species' calculated attempt at defining ourselves not by the notion of some genetic superiority over other animals, but by the society we belong to and our relationship to it.

coin toss
coin toss
realism is knowing that out of 100 coin tosses about 50 will be heads.
pessimism is looking at the 40 heads before you and concluding you're going to get a tail.
optimism is knowing that it's your one toss that matters and your toss is independent of all the other tosses before and after you.
idealism is thinking that all coin tosses should land on its edge. magic (or engineering) is when you actually make it happen.

A magic spell is a social pact where we offer up our agency (the "sacrifice") by conditioning our response to a ritual (often involving the speaking of specific words, ie, the "casting" of a spell) so that that ritual can be weaponized by another person (the "witch") when the conditioned response is triggered within a social group and the effect of its empathic response to played out.
The reason why magic requires a sacrifice is that words have power only because we offer up our power to them.
The fact that people are getting so easily triggered by so many words nowadays makes me think Magic is still growing strong despite the rise of Science.

design x parkour
design x parkour
the problem with purpose
the paradigm of purpose is problematic. the idea that the value of a thing is determined before its existence changes everything. it changes the way people live, the way things are used, the way we make sense of existence.
when design is driven by purpose, we create a specification that describes what something isn't by spelling out what it is. and when its creation is driven by economy, we ensure that the thing we make is no more and no less than the specification. what's wrong about that?
let's design a table. let's decide its purpose is for working. let's define work to be computer work. so this table can be described to be a surface raised to waist level so that computers can be put on it. let's say we want to be able to put computers and books on it so it should support up to 100kg. we can then describe the surface to be made of a wooden panel, supported by metal legs. this gives us a framework for costing and pricing decisions. what's bad about this?
we created a wooden surface to support 100kg. by doing so we decided it does not need to withstand greater loads such as when two adults need to stand on top of it to change the fluorescent. it does not need to withstand sideway impacts such as when your dog runs into it. it is not sturdy enough to be makeshift bed. or a shelter during an earthquake. in a way, it comes with all sorts of terms and conditions that we do not see when we look at it. we see a table, a thing. but it is not a table. it is the embodiment of a design specification. it is not a thing, it is a set of rules in physical form.
that's the problem. our physical experience of the world compels us to see things. but we no longer create things. we cannot understand the nature of the objects before us without understanding the context of its design. we need to read the user manual to know if something can be stacked, or washed, or taken outdoors, or thrown away. we live in a physical world that is increasingly complex to maneuver, and at the same time we as a society are simply assuming that people will somehow understand these things without some sort of education.
parkour to me is that education. it teaches how any terrain can be explored safely. it deconstructs the objects before us, taking apart the set of rules it represents and reconstructs it as a real object. and when we see what is really in front of us, we are better primed to navigate it.
when we move in parkour, we are interested in how we interact with the environment, how we interpret the terrain and listen to its rhythm. we are interested in expressing how we are understanding the things in front of us, beyond the prescription of its designer.
by most standards, purpose is how the world is getting built today. every action needs a budget and every approval needs a justification, a purpose. but when we are moving across a terrain, we experience how inadequate the lens is purpose is, and how arbitrary the motion of justification can be.
not every existence needs a purpose to be of value. not things we create. and certainly not you.

we sleep because
we sleep because
dying is too hard
we are not grown up enough
each night we practice
giving in, or giving up,
when we let the ritual of sleep
swallow us
trusting that we will be born again
when morning comes
reincarnated into the same flesh
the same sins
our days spin into a continuous
gradient of grays
we stop counting
and pretend to forget
the lovers
the cities
and the jobs that fed us,
the friends
the faith
the songs
the fears
and languages that defined us
each a baptism of fire
we have lived
many, many lives
and until we die
whether we are counting or not
in the morning
we will be born again
and we will once more
be young enough
to waste it all over
one more time
dying is too hard
we are not grown up enough
each night we practice
giving in, or giving up,
when we let the ritual of sleep
swallow us
trusting that we will be born again

PDCA

consumers have (1) needs that are the bare essentials and then (2) dreams and desires which are means of self-actualization. businesses offer (1) products that are basically components you build your own solution from, and then (2) comprehensive solutions that address your specific area of interest.
and businesses have a dirty secret - they know that most people know what they need but not what they desire; if they sold solutions to answer your basic needs, they will quickly run out of things to sell you.
that's where they figured you out : they will offer you a confusing array of products to address your basic needs, and then paint a million desires for which they have expensive solutions for, so that you will always be seeking but never finding, always be purchasing but never satisfied.
this is the uranium that fuels the economy of growth - growth being a description not of the consumer, but of the business' ability to reap profit.
that's why you scrimp on the essentials and buy into whatever the latest trends tell you what your happiness needs to be made of.
put that in another perspective - for your basic needs that you have no specific interest in beyond necessity, you spend precious time assembling the cheapest components together, struggling through badly built components to have a working solution.
and for your dreams and desires, the cream of life, you relinquish control and throw your money at whatever story businesses tell you to believe in this season. next season, you're still feeling unsatisfied, they will sell you a new dream.
satisfaction is when you decide you've had enough. but the economy is like a drug dealer - they won't make money if you don't come back for more.
so be prudent in your choice but don't cut back on spending on necessities. find your dream and then take responsibility over it - your dreams are too important to be entrusted to someone who doesn't know you, and even more so to a corporation whose whole raison d'etre is profit.
happiness is easy if you spent wisely - money is peripheral but time is priceless - spend wisely.

the th problem
if you read "ought" and then add a h in front of it you get the "haught" sound. but if you add a t instead of a h, you read "taught" and still hear the "haught" sound. the English "t" already has a "h" sound inside it. if you read "taught" without the h sound you get a tom and jerry pronunciation English does not actually use.
if you read "saw" and slowly slide your tongue inward to the back of your throat and outward into your teeth, you get the range between the "shore" and "thor" sounds. th is a modified s sound, not a t sound!
"awe" does not have a h sound; adding h to it you get "whore" which does have a h sound. but you don't hear "whore" in "shore" or "thor". there is no h in "sh" and "th" - which means "th" has neither t nor h in it!
what about the buzzing th in "thee" instead of "thief"? try making the d and z sounds together - somewhere between "dee" and "zee" you'll find just the right sound for "thee".
now read "zaw" and slide your tongue to the back of your throat you get the "jaw" sound. if you take the buzzing sound out of both you get the "saw" and "shaw" sounds. why isn't "jaw" spelt "zhaw"? And if you did exactly the same thing with "law" you get "raw", which isn't spelt "lhaw".
so what now? i think so many learners struggle with the English sounds because English consonants are intentionally misleading. the letter h doesn't modify the consonant like a shift key on a keyboard - it replaces it altogether like the alt key. which means h could have been x or j and still worked the same!
so why do we hear the t in "the" as much as we do in "thief"? we've been thoroughly indoctrinated and made to think we're the special ones who have made it to the club. English is messed up and so are we.
therefore we need to think of "the" as "dze", "thief" as "sxief", "jam" as "zjam", "shore" as "sjore", "shrill" as "sjrill", "thrill" as "sxrill", instead of being dicks and telling people they aren't hearing it.

now read "zaw" and slide your tongue to the back of your throat you get the "jaw" sound. if you take the buzzing sound out of both you get the "saw" and "shaw" sounds. why isn't "jaw" spelt "zhaw"?

Time is Money
Time is Money
Time is Life、時間は人生そのものです。
しかしMoney is Time は本当です。
