i think human rights should not be thought of as a focus on the individual. Nor is it a "natural" way things "should be". i think it is an assertion that all humans are members of a larger, consciously crafted human society that has time and again defied the boundaries of how animals in nature live and die. Human rights, as are most ideologues, unnatural. it is the species' calculated attempt at defining ourselves not by the notion of some genetic superiority over other animals, but by the society we belong to and our relationship to it.
